Penmanship (Poetry)

02nd June 2024
This cheap pen is automatic
it writes while I’m asleep
and scribbles twice as quickly
catching flighty dreams to keep

It can take notes underwater
or write slogans on the sky
words often change their colour
when my mood affects the dye

This biro is a bloodhound
it sniffs around for truth
scratches through old falsehoods
underlining scanty proof

It doodles along margins
and likes to draw a bit
tries its clumsy hand at rhyming
though the well’s fresh out of wit

This pen’s a tube of plastic
full of ink’s blue chemical
bound to fade as time runs heedless
of its lifespan critical

Drooling random streams of darkness
as it stutters from night’s cage
dragging captive dreams behind it
nails them roughly to the page
