Pennies Down A Well (Poetry)
22nd January 2022
You threw bright pennies down a well
and wished as hard as any
young lover caught up in the thrall
and more sincere than many
The water took them — weighed the price
and lent you half that summer
to listen to such dark advice
tapped out by death’s old drummer
Red autumn leaves choked up the well
with all its promise drowned
for every fate will ring some bell
more desperate than love sounded
and wished as hard as any
young lover caught up in the thrall
and more sincere than many
The water took them — weighed the price
and lent you half that summer
to listen to such dark advice
tapped out by death’s old drummer
Red autumn leaves choked up the well
with all its promise drowned
for every fate will ring some bell
more desperate than love sounded
