Pet Shop Perils (Poetry)

20th April 2014
You’re not safe in the pet shop —
there are creatures that predate
hunt out the weaker customers
and plot their certain fate.

Oh, they may look cute and fluffy
but to look them in the eye
is guaranteed quite fatal —
you’ll forever wonder why

when you just went in for bird seed
you came out with half a zoo
they’re so quick to spot a tender heart
they know just what to do...

They sidle over to the bars
and fix you with a stare
that hypnotizes — you can’t wait
to rescue them from there.

They’ve so perfected the technique —
that desperate “Take me home!”
it’s dangerous for those like me —
my will is not my own.

These days I’m somewhat wiser
having sussed their wily habits
but, even so, I am a slave
to three triumphant rabbits.
