Really Not Surprising (Poetry)

I didn’t plan things this way
I never planned at all
so really not surprising that
my life went to the wall

I couldn’t blame the weather
or curse forgotten gods
and maybe it was karma
or simply rotten odds

I guess I’ve been unlucky
it seems to be my fate
I’ve missed all my best chances
I’m always running late

I should have made more effort
not have acted so blasé
perhaps if I had kept the rules
things might have worked okay

Now as things stand it’s all fucked-up
what’s done is done they say
and yet I nurse one small regret
how time just slipped away ...
