Rules of Life (Poetry)
29th January 2008
There’s a crime in being different
it’s law to be the same —
so fit in with the humdrum crowd
and play their simple game.
You mustn’t have your own ideas —
you need to get this straight —
just go along with all the rest
and hide that sinful trait.
Go, mingle with the harmless sheep
and share their tepid weather
‘baa’ politely when you’re told
and preferably together.
Don’t rock the boat, step out of line
or swim against the tide
it isn’t wise to dwell on truth —
it’s virtual suicide.
The key to happiness and health
of all the rules to learn
is listen to the inner voice
but don’t speak out of turn.
Rage quietly in a corner
make out you’re having fun
a one man revolution
with a poem for a gun.
it’s law to be the same —
so fit in with the humdrum crowd
and play their simple game.
You mustn’t have your own ideas —
you need to get this straight —
just go along with all the rest
and hide that sinful trait.
Go, mingle with the harmless sheep
