Running Out Of Time (Poetry)
19th January 2025
God knows where it went
I just know it’s gone
life’s been overspent
habit limps along
grabs at anything
to get through the day
manage a weak smile
pave the wretched way
soothe the nerves awhile
quell the bitter sting
until reason finds
a hook for sane thought
as the wheel slow-grinds
an idea is caught
small and fluttering
searching for the light
any tiny chink
in the hope it might
keep me from the brink
where my old ghosts fling
dreams into the dark
love’s illusion gone —
died and left no spark
while the years plod on
nothing new to bring
I just know it’s gone
life’s been overspent
habit limps along
grabs at anything
to get through the day
manage a weak smile
pave the wretched way
soothe the nerves awhile
quell the bitter sting
until reason finds
a hook for sane thought
as the wheel slow-grinds
an idea is caught
small and fluttering
searching for the light
any tiny chink
in the hope it might
keep me from the brink
where my old ghosts fling
dreams into the dark
love’s illusion gone —
died and left no spark
while the years plod on
nothing new to bring
