Salt-Free (Poetry)
31st July 2022
There was a girl who could not cry —
not one salt tear fell from her eye
her doctor did not care to say
just how she came to be that way
But when she found she couldn’t weep
distress increased — she failed to sleep
and spent long hours wondering why
when sadness choked her eyes stayed dry
Thus all her hurt was dammed inside
however frantically she tried
to let emotion’s river burst
and did her very best or worst
there was no flood. A stubborn drought
persisted — not one drop squeezed out
The pressure built into a storm
that raged inside — a worry-torn
and desolating dearth of tears
she bottled up for years and years
so few would ever guess her pain
or know how much she envied rain
not one salt tear fell from her eye
her doctor did not care to say
just how she came to be that way
But when she found she couldn’t weep
distress increased — she failed to sleep
and spent long hours wondering why
when sadness choked her eyes stayed dry
Thus all her hurt was dammed inside
however frantically she tried
to let emotion’s river burst
and did her very best or worst
there was no flood. A stubborn drought
persisted — not one drop squeezed out
The pressure built into a storm
that raged inside — a worry-torn
and desolating dearth of tears
she bottled up for years and years
so few would ever guess her pain
or know how much she envied rain
