Scoop (Poetry)

24th April 2012
Another kill — fresh scandal fills the page
Three parts conjecture drizzled with the truth
’Though some will protest — howl a bit with rage —
Who cares when circulation’s through the roof?

So what if someone’s got a few facts wrong? —
A well-known name plunged into disrepute —
Retraction merely strings the plot along
Or, failing that, a juicy legal suit!

It’s all fair game — disclosure and debate —
The public lap it up — their appetite
Insatiable for gossip spiced with hate —
The article draws blood with every bite.

The editor’s got neck and balls of steel —
Celebrity’s a target in his book
The rich and famous guarantee appeal —
No qualms about the friendly hands he shook.

It’s dog eat dog — the next scoop will displace
Attention — find some riper bone to gnaw —
The high and mighty’s sudden fall from grace
Is food for passing thought, and little more.
