Severed (Poetry)

02nd June 2009
You were the choicest cut —
carved from my world-weary bone
the tender part of me
that tempted every tongue.

I never saw the quick thin knife
so keen to slice you from my side —
part our flesh — close-fibred sinews
failed to keep us whole.

Severed now, and rawness patched
by years of skin heals just enough
time eats us both while hunger
is a passing thing, an ache.
