Shoe Box (Poetry)
04th September 2016
Small and white and spotless — gleaming pure
its lacquered finish chill with irony
the contents still — devoid of memory
a broken promise anguish could not cure.
A doll-size casket carved in ivory
lined in padded silk to rest her head
her life too short for sentiments unsaid
a passing name — a simple eulogy.
With ceremony buried good and deep
upon a cold and blustery spring day
they packed her shoe box — tidied all away —
gave it to old Mother Earth to keep.
its lacquered finish chill with irony
the contents still — devoid of memory
a broken promise anguish could not cure.
A doll-size casket carved in ivory
lined in padded silk to rest her head
her life too short for sentiments unsaid
a passing name — a simple eulogy.
With ceremony buried good and deep
upon a cold and blustery spring day
they packed her shoe box — tidied all away —
gave it to old Mother Earth to keep.
