Should Love Come Down (Poetry)
07th April 2019
I love the whole idea of God
but love is baffling
no sense or logic to its rules
it’s hard to judge the thing
But “Judge Ye Not” the Bible says
translated by some tongue
who couldn’t hope to comprehend
what deep confusions come
from doctrine barely underpinned
by any scraps of proof —
did God’s translator swear in court
His words were the whole truth?
Back then there was no black-bound book
on which to place a hand
and take the oath in His good name
“there is some promised land...”
I love the notion of a god
it’s oddly comforting
if love can save this broken world
I wish it would begin
If I thought that God was listening
I’d send Him a quiet prayer
I’d hedge my bets although I doubt
there’s anybody there
The intellect denies the need
for mystery’s stale tricks
worn out from too much prophecy
yet propaganda sticks
I still can’t shake off the idea
and look from star to star —
will love’s cold beggar chance to knock
and find my door ajar?
Should love come down this Christmas
I’ll be the first to cheer
with my heartfelt Hallelujah!
ringing out for Him to hear
but love is baffling
no sense or logic to its rules
it’s hard to judge the thing
But “Judge Ye Not” the Bible says
translated by some tongue
who couldn’t hope to comprehend
what deep confusions come
from doctrine barely underpinned
by any scraps of proof —
did God’s translator swear in court
His words were the whole truth?
Back then there was no black-bound book
