Showing Mercy (Poetry)

29th November 2015
When his old owner tripped and died
the little dog grew thin — he pined.
he wouldn’t eat (they tried and tried)
they put him down — declared it ‘kind’.

When Gran passed on and Grandad grieved
so much he was near skin and bone
they made him eat, though some believed
they had no right. Their hearts were stone.

When cancer crucified a friend
years back, yet still who can forgive —
they had her linger ’til the end —
condemned to drag it out and ‘live’.

Vets show compassion to dumb beasts
and end their suffering and pain
but not so doctors, likewise priests.
Their lack of mercy’s all too plain.

How can it be a crime to ease
such agony? We hear their cry —
all those with terminal disease.
The sin is not to help them die.
