So Sudden (Poetry)
15th July 2012
Sudden news — the worst — and it takes time
for something so enormous to sink in.
He’s gone — as though somewhere far-off and dim
a switch was flicked —
the lights went out on him
and now he’s in that darkness and we’re left
fumbling for a reason to accept
what’s happened here — aggrieved
why no one has a clue
what life’s about —
this world we all pass through
where our stay is brief — a blink —
a dream of sun and rain
and then, as if on cue we leave
and journey on again.
for something so enormous to sink in.
He’s gone — as though somewhere far-off and dim
a switch was flicked —
the lights went out on him
and now he’s in that darkness and we’re left
fumbling for a reason to accept
what’s happened here — aggrieved
why no one has a clue
what life’s about —
this world we all pass through
where our stay is brief — a blink —
a dream of sun and rain
and then, as if on cue we leave
and journey on again.
