Song For Stuart (Poetry)
19th December 2021
(After R.L.Stevenson)
Let’s sing us a song of one that is gone —
of he who lives here no more
he on whose back the warm sun shone
and the moon hung her bright lamp for
Let’s sing a song of an average man
his life cut down before time
remember him the best we can
where our thoughts and these words combine
What do we know of his loves and his hates?
What of his most-cherished plans —
since now before those Pearly Gates
his spirit undoubtedly stands?
Let’s conjure a song and recall his name
with a smile and a deep regret
we knew so little — more’s the shame
so less, down the years, to forget
For now let us sing of all that is gone
in words our sorrow hears cry
think of a soul travelling on
and bound for his home in the sky
Let’s sing us a song of one that is gone —
of he who lives here no more
he on whose back the warm sun shone
and the moon hung her bright lamp for
Let’s sing a song of an average man
his life cut down before time
remember him the best we can
where our thoughts and these words combine
What do we know of his loves and his hates?
What of his most-cherished plans —
since now before those Pearly Gates
his spirit undoubtedly stands?
Let’s conjure a song and recall his name
with a smile and a deep regret
we knew so little — more’s the shame
so less, down the years, to forget
For now let us sing of all that is gone
in words our sorrow hears cry
think of a soul travelling on
and bound for his home in the sky
