Song For The Once-Famous Man (Poetry)

14th August 2022
That was your heyday
the glory, the fame
it’s fading, it’s over
it won’t come again
you’ve had the best of it
the rest’s all downhill
but the sugar-taste lingers
you crave for it still

                        See, nothing lasts forever
                        the season’s on the turn
you flew so high you never dreamed
one day you’d crash and burn

Few will remember
your name up in lights
the street stretches empty
cold rain fills the nights
no one queues to see you
no knock on the door
your fans have all left you
downhearted and poor

                        See, no one stays forever
                        love’s faithless back will turn
                        celebrity not what it seemed
                        old passion set to burn

Farewell to heydays
you’ve lived through the flame
you’ve learned to be human
outlasted that pain
fame proved to be shallow
a flash in the pan
simply swallow that lesson
and be your own man

                        No promise lasts forever
both love and luck will turn
however hard you’ve worked and schemed
the world just lets you burn
