Song Of The Lonely Spinster (Poetry)
08th August 2021
Is this where love has got me —
feeling lonely old and numb
in this isolated tower
sure that rescue now won’t come?
All those promises of Summer
long-dissolved to Winter rain
every fleeting tease of sunlight
stabs at longing once again
There’s no shining knight on horseback
full of bold romantic plans
to release me from this prison
sweep me off to warmer lands
There’s no roguish gypsy lover
hidden underneath my bed
just these Barbara Cartland novels
keep me company instead
The one heart I used to cherish
the war hastened to his grave
my young hopes were buried with him
so there’s little left to save
But I dream of a companion
a real hero and true friend
who’s still missing from my story
and I need that happy end
feeling lonely old and numb
in this isolated tower
sure that rescue now won’t come?
All those promises of Summer
long-dissolved to Winter rain
every fleeting tease of sunlight
stabs at longing once again
There’s no shining knight on horseback
full of bold romantic plans
to release me from this prison
sweep me off to warmer lands
There’s no roguish gypsy lover
hidden underneath my bed
just these Barbara Cartland novels
keep me company instead
The one heart I used to cherish
the war hastened to his grave
my young hopes were buried with him
so there’s little left to save
But I dream of a companion
a real hero and true friend
who’s still missing from my story
and I need that happy end
