Songs From A Sad Heart (Poetry)

05th May 2019
It was the holy grail of life —
the heart of every song
the reason and the rhyme of life
and yet love’s map was wrong

It led me into nomansland
no water quenched my thirst
the desert stretched on either hand
the locusts got there first

They ate it up — no leaf survived
to tell its tale of green
the epilogue once I arrived
long blown away — unseen

I somehow missed the best of it
too late to take my turn
I trudge the ruined rest of it
resist the sad slow-burn

I’ve more regrets than hope can bear
it withers like some weed
the heart pretends it doesn’t care
for love — denies all need
