Still Missing (Poetry)

If you came back now
I wouldn’t know what to do
I have waited far too long
and my love has all worn through
some loves don’t last forever
maybe they’re not meant to
so keep forgetting me
and I won’t think of you

Don’t change your mind child
you’ve left it far too late
for nobody’s home now
and the notice on the gate
says DO NOT TRESPASS
there’s no need to translate
you’ll not be welcomed back
and it’s not open to debate

So don’t get the notion
should the prodigal return
all will be forgiven
but listen well and learn
some hearts end up broken
and however hard we yearn
blood may be blood
but you — lost love —
are past all my concern
