Stop The World (Poetry)

Oh God! — What were we thinking? —
Why did we jump so late?
The watchdog drugged or sleeping
and the wolf outside the gate

Were we really so complacent?
Were we honestly so dumb?
Who among us isn’t mortal?
Who can’t hear the battle’s drum?

Now the party’s really swinging
and there’s bodies on the floor
and we’re wondering what’s hit us —
we’ve not seen the like before

All the sheep wide-eyed with panic
and the shepherd in his bed
it’s a time to pull together
while we bury all our dead

God alone knows where we’re going —
we’re simply living day to day
it’s just like the war, they’re saying —
time to stop the world. And pray
