Tether (Poetry)

Just when I thought
I’d got to the end of it
miraculously
(or so it seemed)
there were a few more
inches left to go
and these were all
I needed to hang on.

How tethers stretch so far
remains a mystery
and however long
(or short)
we imagine them to be
it’s pretty much guaranteed
they’re always longer
than we think.
