That Darkness (Hidden By the Light) (Poetry)
12th August 2012
It’s always there — invisible —
although the sun shines bright
the shadow lurks and waits its chance
to smother out the light.
Few notice how the darkness clings
around the edge despite
the glowing bulb that does its best
to bully back the night.
Illumination everywhere —
electrical or flame —
halogen or neon gas —
but darkness has no name.
Defined as just the lack of light
it makes no other claim
except when every glimmer’s gone
that darkness will remain.
although the sun shines bright
the shadow lurks and waits its chance
to smother out the light.
Few notice how the darkness clings
around the edge despite
the glowing bulb that does its best
to bully back the night.
Illumination everywhere —
electrical or flame —
halogen or neon gas —
but darkness has no name.
Defined as just the lack of light
it makes no other claim
except when every glimmer’s gone
that darkness will remain.
