The 60s (Poetry)

07th April 2019
Come join the party —
come one and all
get off, get laid —
we’ll have a ball

There’s wine and beer —
there’s LSD
they’re playing pop
there’s poetry

We’ll have a blast
we’ll all get high
out of our skulls
perhaps we’ll fly

What can it hurt
to have some fun
when love is free
and we are young?

***

The party rocked
the music swung
some jived around
cute couples clung

The atmosphere
was blue with smoke
some sampled pot
some snorted coke

The psychadelic
colours ran
with peace declared
to everyman

They crashed and slept
sprawled on the floor
and one OD’ed
outside the door

The fuddy-duddies
then returned
to find their palace
wrecked and burned

They called the law
who made a case
they termed it outrage
sheer disgrace

Some were arrested
some were jailed
love’s revolution
over — failed

***

Come join the party
fifty years on
the music’s muted
the edge has gone

No sex no booze
(not openly)
there’s nothing now
that’s fun or free

And inhibition
rules OK
the young grown old
we’ve had our day
