The Best Days (Poetry)
28th August 2022
They were the best days of our lives
we didn’t know it at the time
but simply lived them as our due
unquestioning how bright their shine
We took for granted all those things
we now look back on in old age
scarcely able to believe
that we have reached this woeful stage
where the future looks so bleak
the whole world in such a state
reminiscing is small comfort
when we’re facing a grim fate
They were the best years of our lives
running hopeful — giddy-glad
and just as well we didn’t see
what’s in store — the forecast’s bad
we didn’t know it at the time
but simply lived them as our due
unquestioning how bright their shine
We took for granted all those things
we now look back on in old age
scarcely able to believe
that we have reached this woeful stage
where the future looks so bleak
the whole world in such a state
reminiscing is small comfort
when we’re facing a grim fate
They were the best years of our lives
running hopeful — giddy-glad
and just as well we didn’t see
what’s in store — the forecast’s bad
