The Blind Rabbit (Poetry)
04th May 2017

All by himself on open grass
he grazed quite unconcerned
with cars and people walking past
as though he’d never learned
the dangers close proximity
with man or cold machine
might pose to his fragility —
such perils lurked unseen
Both eyes squeezed tight against the glare
of daylight — swollen sore —
yet doggedly he feasted there
’til he could eat no more
then leisurely he hopped away
no panic and no rush
while we looked on — no words could say
what pity rose in us
This insubstantial scrap of fur
intent to stay alive
no slings or arrows could deter
his instinct to survive
he shamed us somehow with his will
unconquered by his plight
he carried on regardless ’til
he vanished — lost to sight.
