The Book I Put Down (Poetry)

23rd June 2024
The book I put down
that waits to be read
the marker askew
I focused instead
on sleeping in bed

Too tired by the end
of a stressful day
to take on what sense
a novel might say
and thus lose my way

Best leave the much-praised
and prize-winning tale
until I’ve the time
to give without fail
and follow that trail

wherever it goes —
such authors dig deep
toy with emotion
oh, read ’em ‘n’ weep!
denouements must keep

I’ll save this book for
some wet afternoon
time hangs on my hands
which may not be soon
await some blue moon ...
