The Chances Were (Poetry)

19th February 2023
You held me once — you know you did
held me for a moment or a year
it matters not how long we clung
my skin recalls that pressure warm and clear

You loved me once — I swear you felt
that sudden overwhelming urge to touch
it drowned us both however long it took
to do the deed — experience the rush

of passion’s raw announcement. We both knew
the chances were we wouldn’t last the course
and yet for that unmeasured gap in time
we risked the maelstrom — gave in to its force

You held me once — you know its true
and that hot flame has never quite gone out
it smoulders through odd thoughts — disturbs my dreams ...
Love doesn’t die
of that there is no doubt
