The Daily Struggle (Poetry)
16th October 2022
There’s something surreal
in this quite absurd
choreography
this jiggle of limbs
always out of step
I’m too old to learn
new variations
my body’s rhythms
unreliable
its beat out of whack
Age has its own jazz
syncopations
untuned to the brain
odd innovations
grate or tickle nerves
The struggle to curb
erratic tempo
and co-ordinate
a flowing movement
pulls out all the stops
It’s a puppet-dance
a jerky ballet
with no glissando
the strings got tangled
tripping through each day
in this quite absurd
choreography
this jiggle of limbs
always out of step
I’m too old to learn
new variations
my body’s rhythms
unreliable
its beat out of whack
Age has its own jazz
syncopations
untuned to the brain
odd innovations
grate or tickle nerves
The struggle to curb
erratic tempo
and co-ordinate
a flowing movement
pulls out all the stops
It’s a puppet-dance
a jerky ballet
with no glissando
the strings got tangled
tripping through each day
