The Death Of Dogs (Poetry)
16th June 2015
(Based on a true event)
Shocking news — quite dreadful —
the death by fire of man’s best friend.
Deliberate, too, by all accounts —
some evil canine-hater criminally-wired
set the place alight.
Reports say that they found the blaze at dawn
but couldn’t save them all —
the refuge had become a hell
ironic for those starving waifs and strays
unwanted — kicked out on the streets
to wander until charity
gave them a home.
Now some crazed nutter’s put an end to that —
the building’s gutted.
There’s most likely been a flurry of appeals
to true dog-lovers everywhere
for help.
And no doubt money came rolling in.
The arsonist? — No news, so far, of him.
If it had been a children’s home
the killer would be hunted down and given life.
