The Death Of Her Prince (Poetry)
11th April 2021
Her suitor from across the sea
the tall young man so straight and true
a figure from romance’s age
his hair so blond, his blood so blue
And how he wooed his future queen
only she, on this dark day
can dwell upon — console herself
now his warm hand has slipped away
For only she knows how it was
when they first met — princess and prince
how her heart leapt to catch his smile
and how she’s loved him ever since
Obeying rules of protocol
and shadowed by a chaperone
few were the opportunities
for those who scheme to be alone
Yet surely there were moments when
they sneaked away from public view
and stole a brief clandestine kiss
the way determined lovers do
Perhaps there were some magic nights
he danced her laughing off her feet
the ballroom memory a haze
his words, his touch what made it sweet
Their wedding, then the waiting throne
him ever-constant at her side
throughout the turmoil of the years
her confidante and trusted guide
Grief has no depth, it has no sides
Death’s chasm yawns and never heals
they kept their vows and now he’s gone
and only she knows how that feels
the tall young man so straight and true
a figure from romance’s age
his hair so blond, his blood so blue
And how he wooed his future queen
only she, on this dark day
can dwell upon — console herself
now his warm hand has slipped away
For only she knows how it was
when they first met — princess and prince
how her heart leapt to catch his smile
and how she’s loved him ever since
Obeying rules of protocol
and shadowed by a chaperone
few were the opportunities
for those who scheme to be alone
Yet surely there were moments when
they sneaked away from public view
and stole a brief clandestine kiss
the way determined lovers do
Perhaps there were some magic nights
he danced her laughing off her feet
the ballroom memory a haze
his words, his touch what made it sweet
Their wedding, then the waiting throne
him ever-constant at her side
throughout the turmoil of the years
her confidante and trusted guide
Grief has no depth, it has no sides
Death’s chasm yawns and never heals
they kept their vows and now he’s gone
and only she knows how that feels
