The Fights Forgotten (Poetry)
23rd June 2024
The truth of it is
time has given me
enough of a gap
to fondly look back
and believe in you
Small annoyances
those petty nit-picks
lost in the glow of
sweet reminiscence
your faults all ironed out
And there you’re basking
in near-perfection
so I tell myself
over and over
I made a wrong choice
But did I really?
I try to recall
the reason I left
I know there were fights
yet where are the scars?
My heart remembers
moments of closeness
warmth and tenderness
I can’t unlove you
despite wanting to
time has given me
enough of a gap
to fondly look back
and believe in you
Small annoyances
those petty nit-picks
lost in the glow of
sweet reminiscence
your faults all ironed out
And there you’re basking
in near-perfection
so I tell myself
over and over
I made a wrong choice
But did I really?
I try to recall
the reason I left
I know there were fights
yet where are the scars?
My heart remembers
moments of closeness
warmth and tenderness
I can’t unlove you
despite wanting to
