The Forever War (Poetry)
26th June 2019
One more fight and then another
skirmish in the mud and mire
feud and battle — always hassle
cut by cut across the wire
Lives slow-burning in the rubble
nothing sacred nothing safe
every hope is isolated
every child a homeless waif
Distance hides the suited despot —
faceless as the smoke-dark cloud
that chokes forever’s ruined city
silently the vultures crowd
There is no treaty never broken
words on paper are no shield
fire will turn the world to ashes
fear the weapon cowards wield
If there’s a land untouched by conflict —
some modest spot sly bombs can’t find
that’s home to freedom and contentment
I’d rush to leave this shell behind
skirmish in the mud and mire
feud and battle — always hassle
cut by cut across the wire
Lives slow-burning in the rubble
nothing sacred nothing safe
every hope is isolated
every child a homeless waif
Distance hides the suited despot —
faceless as the smoke-dark cloud
that chokes forever’s ruined city
silently the vultures crowd
There is no treaty never broken
words on paper are no shield
fire will turn the world to ashes
fear the weapon cowards wield
If there’s a land untouched by conflict —
some modest spot sly bombs can’t find
that’s home to freedom and contentment
I’d rush to leave this shell behind
