THE FUTURE

“Get ready for the future: it is murder” Leonard Cohen

We think we have a job for life
and so we plan ahead —
a trust fund for the son-and-heir
a will for when we’re dead

We cough up tax along the way
our bills are paid on time
we do our bit for charity
our conscience free of crime

Although we keep our noses clean
there is no guarantee
that God or government will help
the hardluck family

We feel the bitter wind of change
see homeless on the street
the Christmas lights might glitter but
there’s litter round our feet

this careless world has tossed away
now life’s just Chance or Fate
we join the traffic homeward bound
it’s cold and dark and late
