The Killjoy Brigade (Poetry)

They’ve been around for many years
but who they are and why
they have a mind to outlaw fun
and bid us all comply

with their ideas — some set of rules
to save us all from sin
their message clear — there’s wickedness
in almost everything.

We mustn’t drink, take drugs or smoke
we shouldn’t dream of sex.
The very mention can bring on
some very strange effects...

So purge the body and the mind
cast out those base ideas
that pleasure is its own reward
rekindle dark-age fears

that we’re hellbound unless we lose
our appetite for fun
we’re better off quite miserable
so censorship’s begun

and puritans are in control
those killjoys are deciding
what we’re allowed to see or do
while all the while they’re hiding

their own agenda — trick by trick
each piece of legislation
is turning a once cheerful land
into a joyless nation.

Small wonder we’re all so depressed
and feeling downright blue.
Time to repeat the 60s ...
The revolution’s overdue.
