The Life Before (Poetry)

28th June 2020
Will things ever be the same
or will some damage last?
It’s almost certain change will come
once this strange war is past

Then the big task of pulling back
the ground that has been lost
of counting up and making good
the monumental cost

Repairing, healing, smoothing out
and dealing with the scars
then maybe daring to look up
to wish again on stars

And once the dust lies undisturbed
the broken on the mend
some calm restored — will it be true
the panic’s at an end?

Do all survivors feel the same? —
uneasy luck won’t last
grown fearful some sly change might come
and our old life is past?
