The Light Of The World (Poetry)

William Holman Hunt 1827 – 1910
British Painter: a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (1848)

He knocks on the wood of a door long-unopened
its sill overgrown with a straggle of stems
soft summoning sounds in a night barely broken
each beam from His lantern weaves comfort and blends

the edges of shadows that gather in waiting
curious should he find welcome within
like a guest unexpected arriving so late in
a place where no other might knock on a whim

His face a warm glow that reflects pure intention
His mission is saving the world — one by one
and the spreading of Truth by divine intervention
in the light of His being God’s own blesséd son

Stood patient forever — His message ongoing
the image burns bright in the annals of Art
each reverent brush stroke so faithfully showing
belief in the Saviour that touches the heart
