The Link (Poetry)
11th August 2006
They've found another skull,
much older than the first -
an unknowing piece of evolution's chain.
Quite where this one fits is any boffin's guess
for the yawning gap between
ape and man is like a piece of string -
any length you can imagine,
more or less.
So where does ape leave off and man begin?
Had he the vaguest notion that he was
neither fish nor fowl but kind of hominid? -
a limbo state, unconscious what strange fate
time had planned for him.
He left these small bones for minds to worry at -
but he's the better off
for living his short life the way he did,
too busy with his day to day concerns
to stop and question.
