The Magpie Syndrome (Poetry)

09th July 2024
She loved her trinkets
her bright snazzy beads
armfuls of bangles
rings on each finger
adorned with spangles

Her jacket lapel
a dazzle of bling
expressing a mood
exuberant — high
sheer undisguised zing

Her dresser awash
with cascades of glitz
flashing stray rainbows
her boudoir soft-lit
with their reflections

She couldn’t resist
the shiny allure
of plastic or paste
desiring no cure
for this affliction

She revelled in gems
entirely obsessed
and utterly hooked
no will to suppress
jewel addiction
