The Man You Weren't (Poetry)

I saw a man I thought was you
the crowd it parted — let me through
but as I came to that same spot
all out of breath I found you not

I found you not and so I cried
the trick of light had cruelly lied
the figure that my heart mistook
was someone with a kinder look

This stranger asked why did I weep
I told my secrets — let him keep
my name and number on a whim
Tonight I’m going out with him
