The New Resident (Poetry)

11th August 2024
She moved in without
too much of a fuss
probably because
she didn’t have much
furniture and stuff

I waited for the
van to drive away
made a pot of tea
and thought I would pay
a neighbourly call

I knocked. The door slid
open just a crack
I couldn’t see much
but noticed a lack
of clothing — she stood

half-naked and smiled
while I stammered words
awkward as a child
and seeming a prude
couldn’t meet her eye

I’m not one to talk
but I understand
she works from home — keeps
herself to herself
plus a handy man
