The Orphan's Song (Poetry)
26th July 2026
I have dreams of a childhood I wish I had known
and I relive those years though the time has since flown
I imagine the love I so-wanted to feel
then a happiness fills me that almost seems real.
I’ve a beautiful mother who’s tender and kind
and a father who’s strong both in heart and in mind
I’ve a sweet little sister, a big brother, too
and our home rings with laughter each sunny day through.
There are toys in our nursery — we’ve puppies for pets
and whenever we’ve birthdays, well, no one forgets
for there’s presents and cards and a cake at high tea
from a wonderfully thoughtful and close family.
In the summer, there’s holidays down by the sea
and at Christmas a truly magnificent tree
it is really quite perfect — no sorrow, no pain
so I tell the tale over, and over again.
It’s a heartwarming story for cold sleepless nights
spent afraid of the dark once they’ve put out the lights
a vision to cling to — painted blue cloudless sky
for when truth is so bleak, sadness fashions a lie.
And I’ve clung to that fiction through thick and through thin
and it’s eased away emptiness, holding hope in
for without them — those loved ones sheer need has contrived
I’ve real doubt in my heart I’d have ever survived.
They’re a part of me now — in my blood and my head
a deep history diaried in pages unread
and the family tree is still budding anew
for the more I believe it — the more it grows true.
