The Searchers (Poetry)
14th May 2019
Some comb the sea-roughed shoreline
some track the city street
to look for signs and omens —
thin cracks where cultures meet
The watcher from the window
observes the ebb and flow
of oceans, time and people —
how empires come and go
The litter on the pavement
the coin lost in the sand
the castle gone to ruin
and the war that no one planned
Some spend their whole lives searching
under blue or storm-wrecked sky
but they’ll fail to find enlightenment
and never fathom why
some track the city street
to look for signs and omens —
thin cracks where cultures meet
The watcher from the window
observes the ebb and flow
of oceans, time and people —
how empires come and go
The litter on the pavement
the coin lost in the sand
the castle gone to ruin
and the war that no one planned
Some spend their whole lives searching
under blue or storm-wrecked sky
but they’ll fail to find enlightenment
and never fathom why
