The Stranger I Was (Poetry)
18th November 2024
I don’t recognise
who I used to be
I keep thinking back
trying hard to see
but it wasn’t me
Not just different hair
and a younger face
it’s much more than that
but I cannot place
or pin down a trace
of the person who
that strange girl became
too dissimilar
we are not the same
though we share a name
She was someone else
in another life
worlds away from here
free from care and strife
a contented wife
Fading photographs
give the game away
some imposter stole
my part in the play
rewrote yesterday
who I used to be
I keep thinking back
trying hard to see
but it wasn’t me
Not just different hair
and a younger face
it’s much more than that
but I cannot place
or pin down a trace
of the person who
that strange girl became
too dissimilar
we are not the same
though we share a name
She was someone else
in another life
worlds away from here
free from care and strife
a contented wife
Fading photographs
give the game away
some imposter stole
my part in the play
