The Stranger (Poetry)
20th May 2012
You are the stranger
but I’m still the same
caught in the traffic
reviving your name
the cars stream on by
and you don’t notice me
you’re crossing the road
looking older and free
of the girl that you were
there is something care-worn
in the tilt of your head
and the frown plus the torn
blue denims and trainers
unlaced scruffy cheap
your image so altered
from feminine chic
the glimpse was so quick
I just cannot be sure
I may be mistaken
I had thought before
that my instinct would tell me
infallible true
I’d know in an instant
no doubt it was you
but you are a stranger
unknown and the gap
is widening daily
time drips like a tap
and the moment is wasted
you’re gone like a dream
and the girl I remember
is not who I’ve seen.
but I’m still the same
caught in the traffic
reviving your name
the cars stream on by
and you don’t notice me
you’re crossing the road
looking older and free
of the girl that you were
there is something care-worn
in the tilt of your head
and the frown plus the torn
blue denims and trainers
unlaced scruffy cheap
your image so altered
from feminine chic
the glimpse was so quick
I just cannot be sure
I may be mistaken
I had thought before
that my instinct would tell me
infallible true
I’d know in an instant
no doubt it was you
but you are a stranger
unknown and the gap
is widening daily
time drips like a tap
and the moment is wasted
you’re gone like a dream
and the girl I remember
is not who I’ve seen.
