The Street Where You Lived (Poetry)
18th November 2024
The other side of
town — so way off my
usual beaten
track — it was a street
known only by name
It then became the
very centre of
my universe — like
a pilgrim drawn to
Mecca — magnetized
The house stood detached
and on a corner
solid, impressive
while I gazed in awe
aware you were near
At night, windows lit
I could only guess
which one might be your
bedroom where you dreamed
once maybe of me
That was long ago
you’ve gone and the house
sold to a business
and that’s changed the whole
nature of the street
town — so way off my
usual beaten
track — it was a street
known only by name
It then became the
very centre of
my universe — like
a pilgrim drawn to
Mecca — magnetized
The house stood detached
and on a corner
solid, impressive
while I gazed in awe
aware you were near
At night, windows lit
I could only guess
which one might be your
bedroom where you dreamed
once maybe of me
That was long ago
you’ve gone and the house
sold to a business
and that’s changed the whole
nature of the street
