The Tail Of A Comet (Poetry)
04th October 2015
I’ve been remembering all of today
strange — the date sticks in my mind
while others have faded away
this is the indelible kind.
It’s now such a long time ago —
forty-one years to the night
that we met and I still feel a glow —
the warmth of nostalgia’s soft light.
But you’ll have forgotten, I’m sure
you weren’t a romantic like me
and life is the ultimate cure
love’s affliction becomes apathy.
So, I doubt that you’ll give me a thought
as the hours slip by in a dream
like the tail of a comet that’s caught
in the eye’s photosensitive gleam.
Our affair a faint traceable arc
that lit up our youth’s distant sky
when we whispered our hopes to the dark
with scarcely a hint of goodbye.
How I wish we’d have taken the chance
just to see how it might have worked out —
this notion that one final dance
might put paid to the lingering doubt.
