The Vanishing Thought (Poetry)

It came unbidden
right out of the blue
an idea that seemed
too good to be true
totally inspired

I hesitated
cautious to a fault
pondered carefully
on this flash of thought
in case it misfired

I turned it over
sure I’d find some flaws
nothing’s that simple
there’s usually cause
hence the brain’s hard-wired

But it still seemed sound
(a surprising fact)
but best sleep on it
and not rush to act
when doubtful or tired

Night’s wiped clean my slate
not a hint remains
should’ve made a note
thought’s gone and changed trains
its brief spark expired
