The Villain (Poetry)

06th September 2015
He’s the man who shot John Lennon
gunned down Martin Luther King
he’s the man nobody looks at
he blends in with everything.

He’s the loser with a mission
he shot Lincoln, JFK
an assassin in a raincoat
and he’ll never go away.

He’s the killer in the classroom
on the beach or on a bus
he forever haunts the subway
sitting close — too close — to us.

He’s the face on all the placards
he’s the monster on TV
he’s the story and the nightmare
he performs repeatedly

shocking acts that hit the headlines
he’s invisible as hate
and we never see it coming
all the warnings come too late.

Harsh revenge and retribution
call for blood — he has to die
punishment the sole solution
too few think to question ‘Why?’
