There But For Fortune (Poetry)

05th May 2019
Do not blame them
Do not sit in judgement
You cannot know the pain they’re going through
They’ve suffered past the point
of all endurance
You might well do the same if it was you

To make such a decision’s
far from easy
It’s not the coward’s way to take control
When living’s full of misery
and heartache
it takes strong will to liberate the soul

The good and gentle death
we wish for others
is sometimes not the exit Fate has planned
Illness isn’t neat
and far from easy
to control — distress gets out of hand

It is the gift of love —
this act of mercy
It is the truly human thing to do —
to take away all fear and grief
and offer sure and sweet relief
and not condemn — think on —
                                        it could be you
