There Until The End (Poetry)

27th July 2026
If we had stayed together
and been wise to the complexities of time
and our changing perspectives
where would we be now, my love?

Would we have lived any of the dream —
the fanciful half-joking mythology
we invented for ourselves
while in the dizzy state of attraction
when it all seemed entirely possible
we’d watch every sunset arm in arm
until the end of time?

Once upon a time our story was a happy one
almost too perfect for real life
then the writer in the sky went for drama
the wicked witch arrived to ruin all
those casual promises ...
the plotline faltered and I can’t think why
we didn’t fight for what we had
but let it go as though lacking faith

A hundred pages on
I mourn for what is gone
memories write themselves long margin notes
a kind of rediscovery of personal beliefs
and forsaken yearnings ...
in a late attempt to put things right my imagination
writes the better story — sentimental
in my longing for the happy-ever-after —
we shared it all — you’re with me
                                        till the end
