To Serve Is To Reign (Poetry)
23rd December 2024
There was a donkey in the stable
on that first cold Christmas day
and he brought the child a carrot
laid it gently in the hay
A small gift from one so humble
born to bear the weight of all
those many burdens heaped upon him
at his master’s beck and call
Thus they shared a precious moment —
beast and saviour — no words said
but understanding passed between them
every subtle nuance read
So the infant learned his calling
from the donkey worldly-wise
saw both suffering and glory
in those warm forgiving eyes
on that first cold Christmas day
and he brought the child a carrot
laid it gently in the hay
A small gift from one so humble
born to bear the weight of all
those many burdens heaped upon him
at his master’s beck and call
Thus they shared a precious moment —
beast and saviour — no words said
but understanding passed between them
every subtle nuance read
So the infant learned his calling
from the donkey worldly-wise
saw both suffering and glory
in those warm forgiving eyes
